The Linton Stephens Covered Bridge spans Big Elk Creek between Elk Township and New London Township in Chester County, Pennsylvania. Built in 1886, the 102-foot-long bridge features a traditional Burr truss design, characteristic of many of Pennsylvania’s historic covered bridges.
The bridge was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980, recognizing its architectural and historical significance and its place in Chester County’s rich covered-bridge heritage.
On September 1, 2021, the Linton Stephens Covered Bridge was severely damaged by flooding associated with the remnants of Hurricane Ida. The powerful floodwaters forced the bridge to close, adding another chapter to the history of this historic structure.
Despite the damage, the bridge remains an important reminder of the craftsmanship, engineering, and transportation history preserved in the rural landscape of Chester County.
